TRAVEL GUIDE
Koh Samui, the island of the coconut trees, is the third largest island in Thailand after Phuket and Koh Chang. Roughly 250 square kilometres in size and rising to a height of 635 metres, this rugged granite island is almost the size of Penang. The island is one of a group of more than 80 tropical islands, only a few of which are inhabited. A mountain ridge runs east to west and most of the hinterland comprises of forested hills. The rich hues of wild vegetation are dappled throughout with the contrasting greens of coconut palms and emerald paddy fields. With its white sandy beaches, dazzling coral, luscious lagoons, picturesque waterfalls, swaying coconut trees and crystal clear water, Koh Samui is an oasis of natural beauty.
It was not so long ago that only a handful of intrepid backpackers visited the island. Today, Koh Samui is a cosmopolitan melting pot, attracting budget travellers staying for a month or two in simple beachside fan bungalows, to the mega rich, dropping in for a weekend at a luxury resort or villa on the beach. Hotels and resorts on Koh Samui mostly have their own beachfront, giving them the edge over other popular islands. With its boutique feel and upmarket attitude you really get a sense of being spoilt on this tropical island, but the accommodation is affordable for all budgets and is as attractive to fire-twirling backpackers as to flashpackers toting Louis Vuitton.
Most of the visitors to Samui Island come for swimming, sunbathing or just lazing around on the beaches, which are still virgin and unspoiled. Samui's best beaches line the northern and eastern coasts with the most popular being Chaweng and Lamai. Chaweng is the most popular area for nightlife featuring everything from outdoor music bands to stylish nightclubs. Lamai caters for a slightly older crowd, but also has numerous music venues and bars. If you prefer a more secluded experience away from the main tourism areas, sleepy Maenam beach, Bophut beach and Big Buddha are superb choices; much cheaper and quieter. For exclusivity try Choeng Mon or North Chaweng. The East coast has the lion’s share of restaurants, bars and tourist services.
As an internationally renowned diving spot, Koh Samui offers a wide range of diving and snorkelling facilities and tours with nearby Angthong Marine National Park a kayaking and snorkeling paradise. The coral reefs around the island are very good for scuba diving; boating and fishing are also available. If the beaches, watersports and underwater marine life are not enough, the island offers a variety of other activities and attractions. There are mountains, waterfalls, charming half-forgotten forest Wats (buddhist monasteries) and lovely little islands and islets around Koh Samui.
Also, a great benefit of choosing Koh Samui over other Thai destinations is that there are several other great smaller tropical islands close by and many travelers visiting Samui choose to spend a day or two at nearby Koh Tao or Koh Pha Ngan Island. Koh Pha Ngan of course is famous with party seekers around the world as the legendary full moon parties are hosted each month during full moon. Although it is difficult to match such a party, the nightlife on Koh Samui is rated among some of the best in Thailand, with open air discos, cabaret shows, clubs and pubs, many of which are open till sunrise. Beach parties also occur regularly.
Samui has also become a haven for spiritual healing therapies. Samui has Wellness centres, places to learn yoga, alternative therapy centres and wonderful spas that exist for pure indulgence. Other attractions on offer are a crocodile farm and butterfly garden. There are also opportunities to watch classical Thai dancing, mud wrestling and Thai boxing or practice your cooking skills with a Thai cookery course.

"One major problem is the language barrier in as much that the front desk staff have very little knowledge of english. Despite this, over-all we find the hotel room and the facilities to be acceptable for me and my husband. The hotel is close to the MTR station and is within a major commercial shopping district. Its higly recommendable if not for the hotel personnel. The room is clean and the basic amnenities are made available for the guests. We had a very good view of the Pudong business district. The lobby looks a bit shabby. They could have made it more inviting."
